From Breakdown to Breakthrough: Valerie Crozier-Nicholl on Mindset, Resilience and Sustainable Change

In this episode of Conversations with Agents of Change, I sat down with Valerie Crozier-Nicholl to explore what it really means to create change — not through hustle or perfection, but through compassion, self-awareness and lived experience.

Valerie’s story is one of profound transformation. From community development and council work to coaching, authorship and podcasting, her journey shows how personal healing can ripple outward into families, communities and wider systems.

When a Breakdown Becomes a Breakthrough

Valerie speaks candidly about a period in her life she now describes as a breakthrough rather than a breakdown. After facing significant health challenges, including ovarian cancer, and navigating deep emotional exhaustion, she found herself in a very dark place.

What changed everything was not a single moment, but a gradual shift in mindset — learning how to work with her thoughts, emotions and nervous system rather than fighting them. This inner work became the foundation for everything that followed.

As Valerie shared in the conversation, once she understood how to support herself emotionally, she felt a strong pull to help others do the same. Not from theory, but from lived experience.

Mindset Work Beyond “Positive Thinking”

A key theme throughout the episode was challenging common misconceptions about mindset work. Valerie is clear: this isn’t about bypassing pain or forcing positivity.

Instead, her approach centres on:

  • Emotional safety and self-compassion
  • Understanding stress responses
  • Building resilience gently and sustainably
  • Allowing feelings rather than suppressing them

Much of her work focuses on supporting women who are navigating transitions — illness, burnout, relationship changes, loss of identity, or simply the sense that something needs to change but they don’t yet know what.

Again and again, Valerie sees the same pattern: women who have spent years caring for others, pushing through, and minimising their own needs.

The EMBRACE Programme: A Journey to Emotional Wellbeing

Out of this work grew EMBRACES, Valerie’s flagship programme designed to support emotional wellbeing and resilience.

In the episode, Valerie explains that EMBRACES was created as a journey rather than a quick fix. It offers structure, tools and reflection while meeting people exactly where they are.

I shared during the conversation that I personally took the EMBRACES programme during a very difficult time in my own life — while going through separation and trying to find my way into what I now call my new life. The programme grounded me, gave me clarity, and offered tools I continue to use.

This combination of professional training and lived experience is what makes EMBRACE stand out. It doesn’t demand that people be “ready” or strong — it supports them in becoming resourced, one step at a time.

EMBRACE the Book: Making Support More Accessible

Valerie later expanded this work into her book, EMBRACE: A Journey to Emotional Wellbeing. Writing the book was about accessibility — reaching people who may not be ready for coaching or group work, but still need support.

The book reflects the same values as her coaching: kindness, realism and permission to go at your own pace. It’s designed as a companion rather than a prescription.

Podcasting, Health and Redefining Success

Podcasting has become another important strand of Valerie’s work. Through her own podcast, she creates space for honest conversations about wellbeing, healing and growth — conversations that help people feel less alone.

In this episode, we also touched on a recent update Valerie shared publicly about her health and the possibility of slowing down.

In a culture that celebrates constant productivity, Valerie’s reflections offer a different model of leadership — one rooted in listening to the body, redefining success, and allowing seasons of rest. Slowing down, she reminds us, is not failure; it is often wisdom.

Why Valerie Is an Agent of Change

Valerie Crozier-Nicholl is an agent of change not because she has all the answers, but because she models what sustainable change really looks like by honouring her lived experience, choosing compassion over pressure and by creating ripple effects through individual healing.

Her work reminds us that when we care for ourselves with honesty and kindness, we don’t just change our own lives — we change the world around us. And she certainly has changed the world for each one of the Healing circles she holds and to the attendees to her courses. She is an inspiration for many.

If this conversation resonated with you, know that it’s okay to slow down, to begin again, and to take your next step gently.
